Here are some samples of my Roman shields for a 24 figure Caesarian unit I have finished, more pics to follow. Each shield is carefully handpainted, and takes an hour to do but I think it's worth it. I have always found decals to be too uniform and given the materials used in the day I just don't think they look right on a representation of an historical figure.
